Shirataniunsuikyo, established in 1974, is a natural recreation forest park.  While there are no fences or boundaries to the forest park, it is officially 424 hectares in size.  At 600 meters above sea level, the park entry is located 12km up a mountain road from Miyanoura (the largest town in Yakushima).

The YAYOISUGI & NIDAIOSUGI walks are wonderful courses for those with little hiking experience or very little time to explore Yakushima.  It takes in the beautiful Shiratani Creek, Hiryu-otoshi cascade, Hiryuhashi swing bridge, Satsuki-tsurihashi suspension bridge  and two Yakusugi trees; Yayoisugi and Nidai-ohsugi.

GENSEIRIN PRIMEVAL FOREST is a great course that has a wide range of scenic goodies on a mountain trail that takes you deep into the forest.  This trail is a loop course, so you see new action throughout the hike, and the half hidden moss valleys create many fantastic photo opportunities.  

This hike includes several small stream crossings and 6 Yakusugi Cedar trees; Nidai-ohsugi, Sanbon-ashisugi, Bibinkosugi, Sanbon-yarisugi, Bugyosugi and Nidai-Kugurisugi.  If you are interested in Yakusugi, but you only have half a day, this is your hike.

TAIKOIWA ROCK HIKE  4-5 hours

The TAIKOIWA hike is solid hike that takes you out past the previous two courses and onto Kugurisugi Cedar, Shiratani Mountain Cabin, Nanahonsugi Cedar, `Mononoke Forest` (named after the animated film Princess Mononoke), Tsujitoge Pass and finished at the destination Taikoiwa Rock.  From Taikoiwa Rock you can also see TACHUDAKE.

The FULL EXPERIENCE hike combines the Genseirin Primeval Forest Course with the Taikoiwa Course so you can enjoy the `Full Experience`!  The Genseirin trail is stunning with moss covered trees, rocks and several streams to negotiate (though usually keeping your feet dry).  Joined with the inspiring Taikoiwa views, this is a great day out exploring Yakushima.
