YAKUSHIMA EXPERIENCE offers 4 different hiking courses that take in the best of Shitataniunsuikyo.              
Shirataniunsuikyo, established in 1974, is a natural recreation forest park.  While there are no fences or boundaries to the forest park, it is officially 424 hectares in size.  At 600 meters above sea level, the park entry is located 12km up a mountain road from Miyanoura (the largest town in Yakushima).

This is a wonderful course for someone with little hiking experience or very little time to explore Yakushima.  It takes in the beautiful Shiratani Creek, Hiryu-otoshi cascade, Hiryuhashi swing bridge, Satsuki-tsurihashi suspension bridge  and two Yakusugi cedar trees; Yayoisugi and Nidai-ohsugi.

GENSEIRIN PRIMEVAL FOREST COURSE – 3 to 4 hours plus drive time

This great course has a wide range of scenic goodies on a mountain trail that takes you deep into the forest.  This trail is mainly a loop trail, so you see new action throughout the hike, and the half hidden moss valleys make for fantastic photo opportunities.  

This hike includes several small stream crossings and 6 Yakusugi Cedar trees; Nidai-ohsugi, Sanbon-ashisugi, Bibinkosugi, Sanbon-yarisugi, Bugyosugi and Nidai-Kugurisugi.  If you are interested in Yakusugi, but you only have half a day, this is your hike.

Nidai-ohsugi Yakusugi

TAIKOIWA ROCK COURSE – 4 to 5 hours plus drive time

This hike is solid half day hike that takes you out past the previous two courses and onto Kugurisugi Cedar, Shiratani Mountain Cabin, Nanahonsugi Cedar, `Mononoke Forest` (named after the animated film Princess Mononoke), Tsujitoge Pass and finished at the destination Taikoiwa Rock.  From Taikoiwa Rock you can also see the YAKUSHIMA EXPERIENCE favourite full day hiking course…

TACHUDAKE COURSE

If you have some energy left in your legs on the return we can include the Genseirin Primeval Forest, and this would extend the hiking time another hour and a half or so.  This is our Shirataniunsuikyou Full Experience (see below).

Sunlit Mori

This hike combines the Genseirin Primeval Forest Course with the Taikoiwa Course so you can enjoy the `Full Experience`!  The Genseirin trail is stunning with moss covered trees, rocks and several streams to negotiate (though usually keeping your feet dry).  Joined with the inspiring Taikoiwa views, this is a great day out.
